Dec 09, 2020

The worst flood in Taiwan's recent history hit the western coastal plain of the central and southern region on the night of Friday, August 7, 1959. With a torrential 811 mm of rain dumped on Changhua and surrounding areas in just the first nine hours (a record high), the resulting floods destroyed buildings and roads, displaced many thousands, and took a deathly human toll. Once the flood receded, the true cost was revealed, with 669 dead, 852 injured, 377 missing, and 248 184 left homeless.
